Respected CEO,

I’m very happy that a metro rail is going to be in operation in my city and I would like to thank you for improving the infrastructure of my city. However, did you know India has lost approximately 23 thousand square kilometres of tree cover in the last two decades? India’s forest coverage is below the world’s average of 31% and is still decreasing by 0.67% annually because of deforestation. This is a severe problem for our nation.

Deforestation, the cutting down of trees, is hurting our world. Some facts on deforestation

• Trees produce oxygen, which is essential for humans and animals. Deforestation reduces oxygen levels in the atmosphere. It also causes climate change.
• Forests are home to many plant and animal species; deforestation destroys these habitats. There is a chance that many endangered species may go extinct like the Bengal Tiger.
• The roots of trees hold the soil in place, cutting down trees makes the soil loose which leads to erosion and landslides.
• The nutrients in the soil get reduced because of cutting down trees, thus making it less fertile for agriculture.
• Many medicinal plants are found in forests, deforestation can lead to the extinction of these valuable species.

Your company is one of the top infrastructure builders in India. Your company builds bridges, airports, schools, and other buildings. I appreciate you building all of this and improving the nation’s infrastructure, but at the same time, you destroy the trees, which are the earth’s lifeline in the area of construction which is deforestation. It is also your responsibility to maintain/improve the green spaces in the urban areas where the ecosystem is being affected due to construction.

Here are some of my ideas on how you can maintain the ecological balance

• If a tree has to be cut to make way for construction, you can replant it at a suitable location
• Engage the community and conduct Tree plantation drives  
• Conduct marathons and other events for awareness of tree plantation
• Create Parks
• Celebrate World Environment Day and promote the protection of life on land

This improves the quality of life of people living there

I truly believe that along with developing the nation, you will create a better eco-balanced nation for the future.
